I'm back! My ISP has beaten off its major gremlin assault and I'm back in touch with the world once more.

THIS DAY IN WW2 (1.4.1941)

In Iraq... A coup is led by the nationalist politician Rashid Ali and a group of officers calling themselves the "Golden Square." They are opposed to the British presence in the country. The Regent Faisal escapes to Transjordan. By April 3rd, a new government has been installed. The British send troops from India and the Middle East to ensure access to the vital oil supplies.

In North Africa... The British withdraw from Mersa Brega, abandoning almost the only available defensive position before the open space of the Cyrenaica Plateau.

In East Africa... Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, is taken by the British forces led by General Platt.

TODAY IN MY LIFE

Garage doors and garden gates have been professionally weather-treated and will be complete today.

The Consulting Room is complete and looks mega-professional if I say so myself! A typical Saturday of some "me-time" and the supplementary job.

TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION

I am very pleased with my performance yesterday, particularly in my strong focus. I discovered that focusing on intention was made easier by trusting in the subconscious to deliver it, an old trick Ursula James taught me. This faith means that I don't need to make any conscious effort and my conscious mind settles into a comfortable and relaxed observation/expectancy mode. With other factors now in place, and a new place for faith to focus on, I intend to release the full power of faith into my experience. Watch this space!

In North Africa... Rommel's forces attack the positions of infantry units from the British 2nd Armored Division at Mersa Brega. A fierce battle develops, in which the British come off worst but are able to halt the German advance for the moment. The few tanks with the 2nd Armored Division do not join the battle.

In the Mediterranean... The British cruiser Bonaventure is sunk by a torpedo-boat attack in the eastern Mediterranean.

TODAY IN MY LIFE

Garage doors and garden gates completed! I have decided to have the doors professionally painted and the gates woodstained.

House-husband day! With all other Thursday activities ditched, the house can have my full attention daytime/termtime, or at least after the weekly shopping. With my house now also my business premises, it now makes business sense to keep the place as clean/tidy as possible, and the garden at least under control.

There will be some minor tinkering in the Consulting Room, framing and mounting my certificates, and deciding where to put the hypnotic pattern, which I use for those who prefer a visual hypnosis induction. I may just keep it mobile and plonk it on the window sill as needed, because when the client is reclined, the window dominates the line of sight.

TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION

I was delighted with my own performance on Wednesday, the sternest weekly test of my Emotional Management skills. I was particularly pleased with my rapid recovery when someone trod on my rawest nerve. I have learned to feel bad and do good anyway. My next step is to go from the defensive to the offensive, using my skills to influence the mood of others in everyday life, rather than just when I'm a therapist.

In North Africa... Correctly discerning that the British forces are weakly dispersed in positions which prevent mutual support, Rommel brings his forces forward from El Agheila toward Mersa Brega. Only part of 2nd Armored Division is ready to oppose him. The bulk of the Australian Division is near Benghazi and the remainder is back at Tobruk.

In Berlin... Hitler approves the army plans for the attack on Yugoslavia, to begin on April 6th. Hitler also speaks to a conference of 250 top commanders who will have important parts in the Barbarossa operation. He makes it plain to them that the war in the east is to be conducted along different lines to any previous operation. There is to be no talk of proper "knightly" behavior and commissars and Communists are to be treated with utmost severity.

In the United States... The United States takes German, Italian and Danish ships into "protective custody," effectively confiscating them.

TODAY IN MY LIFE

Well the big move has happened! Getting the client couch to its new home was NOT easy and there was some minor damage to the new paintwork on the landing, but subject to some tinkering, the new Consulting Room is ready. Work on garage doors and garden gates should be complete today adding a little more "kerb appeal" to clients. Wednesday is my "least preferred" day but it has a quiet start, which I intend to use to get my mind in the right place with a little "me-time", and some deep-trance meditation. The day will be a good test of my continuing development in Emotional Management. The new defaults on BLOGGER are a good test by themselves!

TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION

My emotional experience appears to divide into three zones. There is a Happy Zone - circumstances that will definitely make me happy - like getting a good massage! There is a Dark Zone - certain circumstances will definitely make me lose it and behave unhelpfully. These two zones are fairly fixed, so it's a case of move to one when I can and avoid the other where possible.

The third zone comprises the majority of my time and I've named it "The Battlefield". In this area, I have control over what I do by how I respond to both the environment and my own feelings. It makes sense to me to simply accept the other two zones as they are and focus my intention on The Battlefield, with the aim of its total conquest by my Intention. Once achieved, I will be ready for the Dark Zone.

In East Africa... Cunningham's South African troops take Diredawa, Abyssinia, in their advance west to Addis Ababa. The local Italian population has appealed to the British for help because of atrocities committed by deserters from the native forces after the Italian part of the garrison has withdrawn.

In the Mediterranean... Battle of Cape Matapan. The British give up the chase and return to port. In whole the operation the British lose two aircraft. The training of the British forces is given some credit for the success

TODAY IN MY LIFE

Today is RELOCATION DAY! My chief concern is getting the client couch safely from A to B but the only way is to do it and see. Off early to pack up everything else ready for 10am transport. Two clients at Bradford Cancer Support in the afternoon

I have received great encouragement in the form of the response of those I am helping, so there is currently a powerful sense of fulfilment. I am already passing on newly-acquired emotional management skills to my clients and seeing them respond to it. All good! Equally importantly, my elation is well-grounded, so I feel prepared for both success and adversity. Like anyone I can of course be broken, but there is now an acceptance of this that wasn't there before. I am no longer afraid to be hurt at least not right now!

In the Mediterranean...Battle of Cape Matapan. There is a long-range engagement between Pridham-Wippell's force and some of the Italian cruisers. The Italians suspect that a large British force is present and begin to retire. In the afternoon Swordfish aircraft from the Formidable attack the Italian ships, hitting the battleship Vittorio Veneto and the cruiser Pola. The Vittorio Veneto is able to proceed at reduced speed but the Pola is stopped. In the evening Iachino sends the cruisers Zara and Fiume and for destroyers back to help the Pola. The British ships are pressing on in pursuit hoping to come up with the damaged Vittorio Veneto when, during the night, they find the three Italian cruisers and their escorts on radar. The British approach to close range, without being sighted in return, and in a brief gun battle the cruisers and two destroyers are sunk before they can return fire.

In Belgrade... The British Chief of Staff, General Dill, is in Belgrade for talks with the Yugoslav authorities, but there is little he can offer them and no agreements of any importance are reached.

TODAY IN MY LIFE

Four clients to see today, but with the first not until 11am, there's an unrushed start to the morning, further unrushed by missus announcing she feels unwell and promptly going back to sleep. (Not concerned, I don't think it's serious)

Overnight Saturday/Sunday, BLOGGER changed the way it edits the posts, costing me considerable time and causing much inconvenience and frustration. Now it won't respond how I want it to! When I try to globally change the font or justify the text, it adds lots of spaces I don't want. I now have to do all the HTML myself manually. I will investigate moving the blog to WORDPRESS instead.

This will be the last day I see clients in the Park Lane consulting room! Today I have to arrange the big move for tomorrow morning. My chief concern is getting the Client Couch upstairs and intact into its new home in my house.

TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION

The first real test of my newly modified emotional management strategy came Sunday morning when BLOGGER caused me grief as described above. Caught unprepared, I was rather grumpy, but recovered by the afternoon. This morning, having encountered the same problem and lost 90 minutes of my time over it, I was ready this time and recovered within minutes.

Generally, my Practice Days and days off are much less emotionally challenging than the Supplementary job days, but with BLOGGER suddenly not co-operating and the Big Move, as well as a big Spring Clean needed, this week may prove an exception!

Missus reporting that she stood up to "The Nemesis" last week has considerably eased my worries on that score, and trusting her to continue doing so, I can be more focused.

In Yugoslavia... There is a coup led by air force officers and their Chief of Staff, General Simovic, who becomes the new head of government. The council of Regency and Prince Paul are deposed and the 17-year-old King Peter takes nominal charge of government. British agents have had a hand in bringing the rising about. The change is very popular among the Serbian sections of the population (almost all the leaders of the armed forces are Serbian) but less so with the Croats. In an immediate angry response to the change of government, Hitler issues Directive 25 which order planning for the invasion of Yugoslavia to begin. It is to be mounted as soon as possible and the invasion of Greece is to take place at the same time. Hitler accepts that it may be necessary to defer Barbarossa to allow these new operations to take place.

In Washington... Roosevelt's $7,000,000,000 Appropriations Bill for Lend-Lease passes into law. In the Mediterranean... British forces set out to do battle with the Italian fleet. Admiral Pridham-Wippell leads four light cruisers and four destroyers from the Piraeus and Admiral Cunningham the main body of three battleships, one carrier and nine destroyers from Alexandria.

In East Africa... The Allied advance clears the Italian road blocks in the Keren position. The Italian force begins to withdraw toward Asmara. The Indian divisions have lost 4000 casualties in the Keren battles and the Italians 3000 dead as well as many wounded.

TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION

My shift in emphasis was spectacularly successful! The test of time is to come, but right now it feels as if I've made a significant breakthrough. Oddly I've known for ages the importance of Acceptance and Surrender, but never really hit on a technique to apply these disciplines that works for me in every circumstance. Now I've finally found one! I've known of it for ages but only applied to specific types of fear - Dr. Susan Jeffers' FEEL THE FEAR AND DO IT ANYWAY technique. I started applying it to EVERY negative feeling and it worked brilliantly! My book is now way behind my original schedule but I'm glad now because of the important learning points I've picked up in the first quarter of this year, which I can now put into my book.

In the Mediterranean... A night attack by explosive boats of a special Italian unit penetrates Suda Bay in Crete and sinks one tanker and cripples the British cruiser York. Following the claims by German aircraft to have sunk two of the British Mediterranean Fleet's battleships and with the promise of German air support and reconnaissance, Admiral Iachino leads the Italian Fleet on a sortie into the Aegean to disrupt the British convoys to Greece. He has one battleship, six heavy cruisers, two light cruisers and 13 destroyers.

In East Africa... The British forces occupy Harar, Abyssinia. The Italian forces and their new local allies begin an attack on Wingate's Gideon force around Burye.

It was hard work managing raging emotions yesterday, as if the universe rose to my challenge to "bring it on". However I didn't seem to hurt or upset anybody, so that must count as a success.

I have been assessing what I'm actualy trying to achieve. I have been harbouring subconsciously the aim to not "feel bad", but I now consider this unrealistic as that's an inherent part of this life experience as much as "feeling good". Underneath all emotions is a deeper inner peace that I'm aware of even when pissed off.

My aim now is therefore to accept upwellings of negative emotion without letting it take my focus off my intention - Feel bad but do it anyway! Feel ANYTHING but do it anyway! So, accepting the presence of any and every feeling, my intention is to use every encounter to practise my therapeutic abilities.

In Vienna... The Yugoslav Prime Minister Cvetkovic and the Foreign Minister Cincar-Markovic sign the Tripartite Pact. The reality of the situation and the influence of German pressure is made only too clear by the cold tone of the occasion. Germany agrees to respect Yugoslav sovereignty and not to demand passage for troops.

In Belgrade... There are disturbances in Belgrade when it becomes known that Yugoslavia has signed the Tripartite Pact.

In East Africa... The 5th Indian Division renews its advance toward the Italian blocking position on the Keren road.

A quiet couple of days are expected the mornings involving some "me-time" and contemplation and a little housework, and supplementary job afternoon/evening.

After giving my own podcast a good listening to, I was surprised at the high speed "machine-gun" sound of my conversational voice, much faster than my "therapeutic" voice. I think I need to make the former closer to the latter as my marketing strategy becomes more PR orientated.

It is my intention to turn over a new leaf today and apply my energies to every encounter, not just the ones on my terms. They're ALL opportunities to refine my skills.

In North Africa... Six weeks after the mobilisation began, Rommel's Afrika Korps is in place at the front line. In a surprise attack, El Agheila is recaptured from the British by Rommel's forces. General O'Connor and his experienced desert troops have been withdrawn and General Neame has been left to hold Libya with the under strength and inexperienced 2nd Armored Division, 9th Australian Division and an Indian Brigade. The tanks available are mostly old and more or less worn out. Collectively the Allied units have neither the desert experience of O'Connor's veterans nor the professionalism of Rommel's troops. Rommel has one German division, 5th Light, with a strong tank component and part of four Italian divisions. Rommel has been forbidden to attack by the German High Command and has been told that he will receive no extra forces.

TODAY IN MY LIFE
Today's the day!! My gig at BCB Radio at noon today - a chance to promote myself and hypnotherapy in general in a full-length show, rather than the short slots I've appeared in up to now. Thanks to the Information Revolution, it's also a potentially worldwide audience.

Rather than dash round, I've decided to have a quiet morning at home first. A little "me time", a decent meditatio session, some housework. After the show, a somewhat anti-climactic weekly shopping trip before supper and preparing the evening meal. Family quality time in the evening.

I was somewhat disappointed with my own performance at the "supplementary job" yesterday. The focus just wasn't there. Fortunately the ever-therapeutic mile hike afterwards cleared my head, and I could see that resentment and frustration blinded me to the opportunities. Every encounter is a chance to practise my skills, but in certain environments this is sabotaged by misfocus on the possibility of escape. The correct focus has to be there before I go in to these unpreferred environments. Try again on Friday!

In the Mediterranean... German Stuka dive-bombers, with a fighter escort, conduct a raid on Malta. A total of 13 German planes are shot down while the British lose 2 fighters. British authorities decide to withdraw all bombers and flying boats from Malta as a result of the raid.

TODAY IN MY LIFE
Wednesday is always the sternest test of my character, although it gets off to a nice quiet start, so plenty of time to get my focus in the right place. A small amount of ironing to do. I must have needed my meditation yesterday because I was in trance for an hour! Today I will start it earlier or set an alarm.

The lounge curtains are shagged! I may measure up for new ones today, and re-arrange the lounge while I'm at it.

I have been reflecting some more on how my ego cannot cope with certain situations. It just doesn't respond appropriately in these circumstances, or even to the thought/memory of them. Fortunately I'm at a stage where unless caught out, I can usually flit between ego and True Self simply by shifting focus. I think that before you are ready for enlightenment, you must be conviced that there has clearly been something very wrong with your perception.

I now see the ego as a concept of Self that is neither accurate nor in my case particularly useful. However my attention is not yet developped enough to avoid slipping back into default egoic thinking in certain circumstances. I'm working on it! When nothing short of trauma "bothers" me I will know I am there.

Regarding intention, I have found it best to focus on the desired "bottom line" feeling, rather than the circumstance you think would deliver it. I desire to experience continual inner peace, and I'm not really bothered how it gets delivered.
This is therefore the centre of my focus.

I have also concluded that one's dark side, just like one's inherent goodness, is fundamentally a part of my life experience, and the goal is not to eliminate it, which I don't believe possible, but rather to manage it. Perhaps controversially, I believe there are certain circumstances where it is essential ensure to ensure the long-term highest good, in the same way the part played by Gollum in the Lord of The Rings was essential to the final outcome.

I had a couple of incidents in the last 24 hours of nice enough people unintentionally treading on my raw nerves. The usual treatment of space and time is prescribed. At this point I am not confident that raw nerves can actually be healed, only managed. Where possible, the situations that trigger them should be avoided and plenty of calm detachment to make the raw nerves at least a little less raw. My current strategy is to be as calm and detatched as I can for as much of the time as I can.

In the North Atlantic... Kretschmer's U-99 and Schepke's U-100 are both sunk in a convoy battle. These sinkings, combined with the loss of Prien ten days previously, are a severe blow to the morale of the U-boat crews as well as a serious military loss. The sinking of U-100 is symbolic as being achieved with the aid of new radar equipment. Kretschmer is captured after his ship is sunk.

In East Africa... A small British force arriving by sea from Aden in two light cruisers, two destroyers and seven other vessels lands and captures the port of Berbera. The capture takes only a little time and immediately afterward they begin to advance inland. There are alos British gains in the battle around Keren. The 5th Indian Division, which has been unable to advance on the first day, now takes the Dologorodoc position south of the Keren road. The next five days are dominated by Italian efforts to mount counterattacks.

In the Balkans... The Italian offensive is called off. In the past few days they have incurred 12,000 casualties and taken absolutely no ground. However, the Greeks have been compelled by the Italian offensive to do nothing to strengthen their forces which face the German threat elsewhere.

In Finland... The Finnish Diet, meeting in secret session during the evening, ratifies the Moscow peace agreement by 145 votes to three. Speaking before the vote, the prime minister, Mr. Ryti, says: "Finland, as well as the whole of Western civilization, is still in the greatest danger, and no one can say what tomorrow may bring. We believe that by choosing peace we have acted in the best way for the moment."

In Romania... An amnesty is granted to members of the fascist Iron Guard (see September 21, 1939). Eight hundred are released from prison camps after they swear an oath of loyalty to King Carol.

Going through a period of particularly strong lucidity as The Observer rather than The Character. My intention is that this continues indefinitely! It is much more comfortable! "I" and "me" now has a different definition to everyone around me. Everything now appears to me as energy constantly changing form. "Me" is simply an observation point. What "I" do seems to be a combination of my intention and the natural nature of this form. Most delicious is the peace that comes from the combination of calm and detachment.

I have found that it is the perception of a threat that knocks me out of my spiritually lucid mode. Not surprising really - when faced with a lion, it's not the time to contemplate universal consciousness. You cannot serve if you don't survive! However, the problem is that the mind can exaggerate, exacerbate or just plain create a threat. To pursue my objective of being continually lucid, I now need to train my mind to distinguish between a genuine life-threatening situation, which requires a threat response, and the prospect of material/positional loss, which does not.

I was more spiritually lucid than I have been for months yesterday - the prime feeling is relief! I want to continue that today. It's quite difficult to put into words the "procedure". Your awareness takes a step back from your life experience and what you think of as your life becomes just another part of the interplay of energies that is the universe. You are no longer a player, just an observer. Your intention becomes to simply observe it all, experiencing it objectively, and your actions become simply instinctive.

My immediate objective is to hold this perspective for as long and as often as possible. My ultimate objective is to hold it continually.

In my personal growth it's important that I'm several levels in advance of my clients, in order to properly help them. For them, the therapy is egocentric, i.e. to give them tools to manage their lives as individual beings within the context of their already-established beliefs. For myself however, my self-development is Dharmic, shifting from the perspective of the individual to that of Universal Consciousness. I cannot yet hold this persective for prolonged periods, and that is my next objective.

If you choose to adopt the Dharmic perspective, you have to accept that there is no true "me" or "you" - how you see yourself and the world is only an idea and set of assumptions concluded from experience. Everything I think and feel is only a single-point experience of natural forces and energies. The Dharmic objective is to reach an observation level above thoughts and feelings and see them as just another part of the whole picture.

This is not easy when all your life you've believed you were a small temporary individual in a very large universe. All your reactions are based on this assumption! Your mind has to be first completely focused on Dharma as an objective, and then persevere with practices that make the mind so calm and detatched that consciousness can disentangle itself from mind and experience the universe from above the mind's perception. It is this disentangling process that I'm engaged in, which can be quite prolonged, as there are infinite distractions. I've found letting go of anger is particularly difficult as it's a powerful survival tool - I enjoy the power-rush, but I cannot know the peace of Universal Consciousness and anger at the same time.

In Washington... The Lend-Lease Bill becomes law when signed by President Roosevelt. Important amendments have been made by Congress. A time limit has been placed on the operation of the act -- until June 1943 -- but a motion originally passed in the House forbidding US warships to give convoy protection to foreign ships has been defeated. Also to be allowed are transfers of ships to other countries solely on the presidential authority without reference to Congress. Britain is compelled to go on paying cash for as long as this is possible (meaning British assets in the US must be sold below their true value) and it is forbidden to export anything containing materials supplied under Lend-Lease, nor can items wholly produced in Britain be exported if equivalent items are being supplied under Lend-Lease.

After an initially great experience with a tradesman, the experience has declined as the jobs offered get more bitty. The plumber meant to give a quote yesterday didn't even turn up. I have one joiner left to see on Saturday morning but otherwise I appear to be out of options. I may spend the morning doing more research on suppliers, but my other two options are to re-arrange the lounge (to suit the new suite) or to give the bathroom a thorough clean. Not sure which at this stage!

I got "mugged" by a mood yesterday morning after a trio of minor irritating events, although I was pleased with my lucidity within it and rapid recovery with a change of air. Nevertheless, my objective remains to be above it all, so that nothing bothers me or results in unfavourable behaviour. A shift in focus needs to be in place before I make a move, because once an emotion has me, a new space is the only escape. With objectives generally, I've found that it's important to be thoroughly familiar with what they will feel like once you have them. With focus on that feeling, the outcome becomes more likely.

In East Africa... Since taking Mogadishu General Platt's troops have advance 600 miles north from there into Abyssinia and only now come into contact with any Italian forces. Their encounter is at Dagabur, only 100 miles south of Jijiga.

TODAY IN MY LIFE
After receiving a somewhat outrageous quote for supplying/fitting garage doors and gate posts, and numerous bods coming and going without giving any quote at all, I'm back to square one! I'm going to have to do more homework on this one and look harder. I do have another joiner still to look at the job though, and time enough to cast my net wider.

Usual Thursday routine - Some "me-time", Indian Head Massage class, shopping. A plumber to see regarding the bathroom. Quality time with missus in the evening, for whom a new kitchen and new leather suite and prospect of a cruise in the Summer seems to have had the same effect as a skipful of viagra.

I have concluded that to get a woman horny, you just "feather their nest", and to make them hyper-orgasmic, clean it as well : D

It was really hard to write today's paragraph, because the lesson is so highly important. I spent over an hour on it and completely re-wrote it.

For significant periods yesterday I was truly "there", fully lucid within my human experience, fully in the moment. This is encouraging progress. The paradox is that it is because my default egoic thinking is so dark, so potentially destructive that I sought enlightenment in the first place. If this inbuilt darkness had not been there, I would not have ended up serving as I am now. I would not have identified the true enemy - my own inner darkness. Every other "enemy" only requires an appropriate response, but the darkness would possess me. It's not my fault that it originated, but it is totally my responsibility to defeat it.

In Albania... the Italians launch an offensive along the front between the rivers Devoli and Vijose. There are a few local successes initially. The Italians have assembled 12 divisions for the attack and Mussolini himself has crossed to Albania to supervise the progress. There is little subtlety to the tactical plan and much that is reminiscent of World War I. The Greek intelligence of the direction of the attack is good and their defenses well prepared.

With Wednesday being my "least preferred" day, it is a good test of my mental discipline, and this week I heve no excuse for being anything but thoroughly prepared. There will definitely be a little "me time" to sweeten it, and more housework.

After a frenetic couple of months, the pace is slowing to more like normal, and I can start to forge new routines, the most important of which is to fix my daily meditation to 10am every morning unless I have clients at that time.

A free morning gives me the chance to do some thorough client prep and housework, then seeing clients all afternoon. I also have my first free Monday evening in a long while, and I'm not quite sure how I'll spend it - I may do some more work on my book.

In the Mediterranean... Operation Lustre begins. British troops are convoyed from Alexandria in Egypt to Greece. (By April 2nd, a total of 58,000 troops are deployed.) Italian submarines carry out unsuccessful patrols along the convoy routes.

From London... The British government severs diplomatic relations with Bulgaria.

In Vienna... Hermann Goring meets with Romanian dictator, General Antonescu, to secure the participation of Romania in Operation Barbarossa.

In the Balkans... Italian prisoners, captured by Greek forces in Albania, report that 1500 Alpini troops were drowned in the sinking of the transport ship Liguria and that Allied bombing raids have caused heavy casualties and significant confusion behind Italian lines.

There really isn't any excuse to give rude replies to fair requests and posts. At least the LinkedIn guy was polite in his rejection, but just because you're not directly interested in a comment is not a reason to openly express it, unless it's daily, as you may have contacts that are interested.

I have found that there is more to mood than circumstances and the direction of thought. There is a physiological/biochemical dimension. Yesterday despite all my arsenal of techniques, I was overwhelmed by a dark mood for much of the day, which suddenly lifted after a no more than half an hour in front of the news with a cup of coffee, with no real change in my circumstances. My mind was then freed up to re-centre, but instead I have spent the time since wondering what's going on with my body chemistry!

The trouble is there are so many variables, but my main suspect right now is hydration. I will be keeping a close watch on my urine colour and seeing if there's a correlation with mood.

In Germany... Hitler meets Prince Paul of Yugoslavia secretly at Berchtesgaden to ask him once again to join the Tripartite Pact. Paul returns to Yugoslavia convinced that he must decide very soon between Britain and Germany. Talks in the next few days convince him that Britain has little help to offer.

In Occupied Norway... There is a British Commando raid on the Lofoten Islands. The 500-strong force is carried by naval units which include two light cruisers and five destroyers. Ten ships are sunk in the operation and 215 German prisoners are taken. There are also 300 Norwegian volunteers who are taken to Britain. The operation is a success but the Germans take fierce reprisals when the British force withdraws. Many members of the Norwegian resistance movement do not approve of such raids for this reason.

In Greece... General Wilson, who is to command the British forces being prepared for Greece, arrives in Athens to arrange the final details with the Greek general staff. A major convoy is about to leave Alexandria with the first large contingent. The British have only just discovered that the Greek forces in Macedonia have not retired to the Aliakmon Line and will not be able to persuade them to do so because of the damage to morale that would result if territory is obviously given up without a fight after the German move into Bulgaria. Wilson is further hindered by the Greek insistence that he remains incognito inside the British Embassy in order not to provoke the Germans. In fact the German consulate in Piraeus overlooks the port area which will be used to land the British forces, so they are well aware what is happening.

My focus on UNattachment has brought me round in a circle to refocus on another essential life-skill - focus on the intention, but I've learned that this means focus on the intention NOW. A stern test was encountered last night when the dreaded "Nemesis" reaching from a distance managed to ruin an evening of Marital Quality Time. The Nemesis cannot be taken out of the picture so correct focus is kinda essential for maintaining sanity. The eternal completeness within myself does not require the gratification of every preference, and there is where I need to be centered.

TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
I'm at the beginning of the next stage in my spiritual development - the release of attachments. I have learned that any distress of any kind is due to an attachment. What I'm doing now is whenever I feel even the slightest distress, I am in that moment unattaching myself from the source.

I'm expecting this to be tough at first - we are all attached to many things without realising it, big and small. With a house refurb now 2/3 complete, I've many new things to be potentially attached to!

On the other hand, decades of spiritual learning have given me a solid foundation. I know that ultimately I am complete in myself, and that in the deepest sense I need nothing from this universe. I intend to participate in it, having preferences and intentions, but without demanding or needing anything from it.

From Washington... The US Navy forms a Support Force for the Atlantic Fleet. The main part of this unit is made up from three destroyer squadrons of 27 ships.

In Sofia... Prime Minister Filov brings Bulgaria into the Tripartite Pact.

In North Africa... Kuffra in southeast Libya is taken by a Free French force from Chad. Colonel Leclerc is in command. The French force has received some help from units of the British Long Rage Desert Group.

The day of many workmen! Drainpipes already replaced, the soil pipe (the one connected to the toilet!) gets replaced today. The new flooring in the bathroom gets installed and the new furniture suite for the front room gets delivered!

Once the suite is in, I go hotfoot to Bradford Cancer Support for my first client there (all voluntary - my bit for the community) and then hotfoot to my practice for an evening client.

Very centered yesterday, although Monday/Tuesdays aren't very challenging because I'm doing hypnotherapy - my favourite thing in all the world to do. It's adversity that really tests your abilities and purges false notions. Bizarrely it's because of adversity that I can now do what I love - without it I would have settled for a dull safe monotony that would not have added up to much. The old adage is true - if it doesn't kill you it really does make you stronger, and in fact wiser/nicer as well. Now I prioritise the pursuit of my passions rather than false notions of safety.

With a cancellation received yesterday, I've three clients to see all neatly slotted between noon and 6pm, meaning I can have a rare easy start on Monday morning. This will give me time at home to do the monthly accounts and some client prep.

After finally getting round to moving in the last of the pots and pans, the new kitchen is finally FINALLY complete and functional! I expect the drainpipes to be replaced today. Still waiting on quotes from the joiner (garage doors and garden gates) and the vinyl flooring supplier (bathroom).

Very recently I realised my absolute completeness within myself, and can physically experience it! It has taken me a lifetime of spiritual journeying to reach this point! The challenge now is to consolidate my grip on it, to make it a continual rather than interrupted experience. My tactic for doing this is keeping my attention focused on it. Whatever external stimulus arises, I want to remain undistracted, participating fully in life but staying completely unattached to any of it - this is my goal.

TODAY'S SELF-OBSERVATION
If I thought my new-found understanding would stop me getting grumpy, I was to be disappointed! However, I am at least at the point where my soul can observe it happening from a distance. There is an instant powerful negative response to certain verbal stimuli, notably criticism, hostility, disrespect, the irrelevant, commands to do things I was going to do anyway, being asked to repeat myself and the blatantly bleedin' obvious. This gets notably worse when I'm hungry or tired.

Over the years I've come to manage this response so at least being in my company is no longer like walking through a minefield. The key to anger management is thorough preparation before "going in". If you know full well you're going into an environment where buttons will get pushed and raw nerves trod on, You need to have already done your mind-calming and have your coping mechanisms ready. I will be discussing some of these in my forthcoming book EMOTIONAL MANAGEMENT FOR ORDINARY FOLK

The next growth point for me is, since now I know full well what to do, devising good triggers for the necessary techniques so I can get into calm mode instantly when suddenly confronted. I'm still getting caught out by not being properly prepared.

A sartori moment! A mildly frustrating incident during my shift on the "supplementary job" suddenly opened my eyes. My circumstances could not bring me peace, and I could not bring peace to my circumstances, but I could, 24-7 on demand bring peace to my being! I suddenly realized I was totally complete and fulfilled in myself. My connection to the Universal Source did not depend on my connection to my circumstances, these were two entirely different dimensions of connection.

I had some time ago reached the end of seeking. Unlooked for, the end of needing has suddenly arrived. Only one goal remains - the end of all attachment. To experience that while still in mortal form will be amazing!

I am now a "man of a certain age", which I notice in two major ways: I am becomong increasingly long-sighted (I need reading glasses for small print) and, er, "performance". Fortunately, I have discovered by sheer accident that consuming a significant amount of chocolate whilst abstaining from alcohol "before the event" boosts performance to ensure everybody's bell rings. So it's a choice between middle-age spread or middle age droop. Hmm, it's a no-brainer! BRING ON THE CHOCOLATE!

Spiritual focus has gone back to basics and I have been calming the mind - feeling much better for it!

In Athens... The Greeks agree to accept a British force which at this stage is intended to be 100,000 men with suitable artillery and tank support. The Greeks are very reluctant to accept anything less since it would not be enough to fight the Germans off and would only encourage them to attack. The disposition of the British and Greek forces is also discussed. The British prefer a position along the line of the Aliakmon River but the Greeks are unwilling to give up the territory which this line does not cover. No final decision is made -- a serious omission in light of later events.

In East Africa... In Somaliland the main Italian forces defending the line of the Juba River have been defeated. General Cunningham's troops are now advancing very rapidly toward Mogadishu. There is a small Free French landing in Eritrea.

In Occupied Holland... The SS raid on the Jewish Quarter of Amsterdam is completed. About 400 Jews are arrested and deported to the concentration camp at Buchenwald in Germany.

As soon as I stopped struggling and resisting, the soreness eased. I intend to build in surrender and acceptance as an intrinsic part of my morning meditation, so it's there from the start.

The last soldier killed in World War I was Pvt. Henry Gunther of Baltimore, MD. The official end of the shooting was supposed to coincide with the signing of the armistice at 11:00 a.m. on November 11, 1918. Pvt. In East Africa... The attacks of 4th Indian Division at Keren go on with renewed effort. The fighting is fierce over the next two days but Italian counterattacks prevent the Indian troops from making any gains. A long lull follows for the rest of the month while British commanders bring up more forces and supplies for the formal offensive which will be necessary to break the Italian positions.

From London... Churchill formally instructs Wavell to regard help for Greece as having a higher priority than exploiting the success in North Africa. He mentions the important effect on American opinion of being seen to fulfill promises to smaller nations. Colonel Bill Donovan has recently been on a tour of the Balkans on Roosevelt's behalf and is known to value the idea of fighting the Germans there. The British also hope to make a good impression on Turkey and perhaps even establish a Balkan coalition against Hitler.

In North Africa... The British advance comes to a halt at El Agheila. There is little Italian opposition to prevent a further move, but Wavell is being compelled to withdraw troops which will be sent to Greece. He is also responsible for the campaign in East Africa and for making some provision for the defense of Palestine. In the near future, this will demand more of his attention because of German activity in Iraq and Syria.

In the Mediterranean... In an audacious attack the battleship Malaya and the battlecruiser Renown from Force H bombard the harbor at Genoa. The carrier Ark Royal also takes part in the operation, sending aircraft to attack Leghorn and La Spezia. Five ships in Genoa are sunk and 18 damaged. The Italians fail to attack the British force.

A second day de-centred yesterday, although less severely than the day before. However, there are always positive outcomes from such defeats. In this case I was driven to "dust off" some old strategies to rein in my thoughts. A couple of days without the opportunity to, er, "attend to the sacral chakra" didn't help, or indeed the chance to attend to chakra-balancing in any meaningful way, but at this point in front of the keyboard, with the top of the morning to myself, these things have been addressed, and it feels like order is restored. I was completely de-centred yesterday by a remark. I guess it's not just the power of a missile but where it strikes. This one came from point blank range and struck at a weak point. The explosion was delayed until evening!

Oddly I have no regrets. The power of the dark side unleashed enabled me to eliminate a threat, or at least cripple it, but at the expense of hurting someone. It was the not wanting to hurt someone that had prevented decisive action before. I have to say that the regret about causing hurt is far outweighed by the relief I feel in quashing the threat. I'd do it again!

In North Africa... The British advance across Cyrenaica has now begun. Msus is taken and the forces then move toward Antelat. In the north the Italian retreat is continuing.

In East Africa... The British forces begin to attack the strong Italian positions around Keren. There are 30,000 Italian troops in this area. In the first phase of the battle, which last until February 7th, the 11th Indian Brigade manages to take Cameron Ridge but is thrown back from other positions by Italian counterattacks.

In the North Atlantic... The German battle cruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau go on a commerce destroying expedition in the Atlantic under the command of Admiral Lutjens. During the night they pass through the Denmark Strait.

In Berlin... The OKH plans for the German invasion of the USSR are presented to Hitler. He again tries to draw attention away from the central drive toward Moscow which the Army planners think essential.

With my recent (amicable) divorce from networking organisation PRONET, Thursday is now permanently "Househusband" day, but with major ongoing refurb projects on the house and the FIT FOR PURPOSE scheme filling the appointment book, I don't have time to sit on my arse watching DVDs all day! Shopping, tidying and cleaning will be permanent Thursday jobs, and this week I need to order the materials for phase 3 (the bathroom, which starts on Monday, and meet the joiner regarding phase 4 (garage doors, garden gates)

In East Africa... The British carrier Formidable, on her way to the Mediterranean to replace the damaged Illustrious, sends its planes to attack the harbor installations at Mogadishu.

In North Africa... The Australian forces have already advanced well to the west of Derna on the coast and are discovering that the Italians are withdrawing at speed. Wavel agrees with O'Connor that 7th Armored Division should be sent hurrying across the center of Cyrenaica in an attempt to cut the Italians off. Supplies are being assembled to support this move but because the Italian retreat is so rapid the advance will have to start before the preparations are complete.

There's a simple reason for that - I don't like them! (: D) I take multivitamin and fish oil supplements to compensate for lack of 5 a day discipline. Plenty of fibre and protein though.

In East Africa... Allied forces cross the border from Kenya into Italian Somaliland. General Cunningham is in command and his forces are 11th and 12th East African Divisions and 1st South African Division. The main attack will not begin until February 10th.

In Greece... Prime Minister Metaxas dies. His successor is Alexander Korizis. Korizis is less decisive than Metaxas and does not have as good a relationship with the Greek Commander in Chief, General Papagos. Although he is, if anything, more ready to accept British help. This change does not contribute to the smooth running of discussions with the British.

In North Africa... The Italians pull out of Derna and begin a retreat toward the west along the coast road.

In Washington... Secret staff talks begin between British and American representatives. The talks will continue until March 27th. They produce conclusions code named ABC1 which state that Allied policy in the event of war with Germany and Japan should be to put the defeat of Germany first. The talks mark an important stage in the development of cooperation between the US and Britain. As well as their important decisions they accustom the staffs to working with each other.

TODAY IN MY LIFE
After an ironing marathon yesterday, tidying up is not getting much headway. Some more ironing this morning and possibly some tidying.

I have dumped the contractor I had earmarked and organised a new contractor for phases 3 and 4 of the house refurb, which is a big relief.

Dehumidifier is now pulling off less than 1/2 pint a day out of the air, and washing on radiators dries noticably faster!

A repeat of yesterday with a full appointment book, though with the appointments closer together, I can finish earlier. With phase 1 of house refurb complete, ie redecorated hall,landing and new Consulting Room, I was able to get my new toy going today, an Ebac 2650 dehumidifier. There's some damp laundry on the radiators to put it through its' paces! When I return this evening I will be able to see how much water it has collected!

In North Africa... There is a brief tank engagement near Mechili. The British 4th Armored Brigade and the Italian force suffer about equal losses before the Italians retire. The Italian forces in Libya are now split, with one group around Mechili and one on the coast at Derna. These positions do not give each other any support. The 19th Australian Brigade is moving on Derna while Mechili is to be encircled by 4th and 7th Armored Brigades.

In North Africa... The remainder of the garrison of Tobruk surrenders after demolishing some of the harbor facilities. There are 27,000 prisoners. Much equipment is also captured and in fact it will prove possible to put the port into service fairly quickly. The Allied casualties have been less than 500 men.

In East Africa... In Eritrea the Italian forces are falling back toward Agordat in the face of Platt's attacks. There is also some skirmishing along the border between Kenya and Italian Somaliland.

I am currently embroiled in the saga of the mobile phones! I keep them both in a pouch which I left in the taxi that took us home Friday night, and the driver who has them apparently hasn't been at work since due to a bereavement. The trouble is I really want the phones back - they're essential for keeping in touch with missus and my Practice. Going to the taxi base this morning to try and ascertain their whereabouts. I will try and get to the phones from there wherever they are!

In North Africa... The 6th Australian Division begins the attack on Tobruk. The town is already isolated by the advance of the British 7th Armored Brigade which is heading for Martuba and Mechili. The southeast corner of the Italian position is assaulted and after a heavy bombardment the Italian defense is quickly broken. Fort Palastrino is taken later in the day and General Mannella also captured.

After a mega laundry marathon, I can focus on some much-needed tidying downstairs. With a full appointment book on next week's practice days, I have to maximise the use of time at home.

In East Africa... The British forces in the Sudan begin their offensive against the Italians in Eritrea. The British force is led by General Platt and includes 4th and 5th Indian Divisions and units of the Sudan Defense Force. The Italian troops in the various border positions amount to 17,000 men and are led by General Frusci. There is the equivalent of four more divisions in the interior of the country. Kassala is taken immediately.

In Germany... Hitler and Mussolini meet at the Berghof (January 19-20). Mussolini is unwilling to accept German help in Albania but is prepared to accept some aid in Africa. Hiter says that he will attack Greece if it seems that Britain is going to come in.

In the Mediterranean... In further aerial attacks, slight damage is done to HMS Illustrious.

Back home after a thoroughly successful albeit expensive weekend - well it was kinda significant being one's Silver Wedding Anniversary. Still need to put away the stuff hastily unpacked before bed last night, upload Sunday's snaps and maybe post the odd one in Facebook.

Decorator expected today - a few things to clear out of the stairs and hallway.

After Christmas and then much Silver Wedding anniversary related scoffing, I have between now and Summer to lose all the weight I put on! It should come off ok though.

At home in the morning to let the decorator in then, clients in the afternoon and evening.

I don't yet have the right response for when "raw nerves" are trod on, which seem to be rudeness, ignorance, ingratitude, insensitivity and underperformace in others, consciously or subconsciously. Once the nerves ARE trod on, at least I know what to do, but focus on the moment now needs to go to the next level to eliminate these sore points. Complete centredness elimnates expectation and thus disappointment. Because the subconscious reaction is so fast, the "all is well" counter-response must also be instantaneous. One great blessing I got from this contemplation was an idea how to explain centredness to the layman.

The LORD OF THE RINGS movies have several deviations from the books, the most major being the fate of the traitor wizard Saruman. In the TWO TOWERS movie he is slain at Orthanc. In the Mediterranean... Off Pantelleria a British convoy is attacked, first by two Italian torpedo boats, one of which is sunk for no loss to the convoy, and then by 40 German Stuka and Ju88 bombers. The carrier Illustrious is hit six times by dive bombers. Warspite dodges several attacks but other ships are also damaged. This is the first action by the German 10th Air Corps. Illustrious retires to Malta. All the British forces from Gibraltar and Alexandria have been out covering convoys for Greece and Malta. More troops and 18 fighters are brought to Malta. The British destroyer Gallant is sunk after striking an Italian mine in the Sicilian Channel

In Washington... The Lend-Lease Bill is introduced to Congress. There is considerable opposition. Among the prominent opponents of the bill are Senators Wheeler and Nye, former Ambassador Kennedy and Charles Lindbergh.

In Moscow and Berlin... Soviet-German pacts on frontiers in Eastern Europe and on trade are signed. Food and raw materials are to be exchanged for industrial equipment.

In Albania... The Greek forces take Klisura after the four Italian divisions in the area are pulled back.

In North Africa... Advance units of the Allied force reach the outer defenses of Tobruk after taking El Adem airfield to the south. Patrols to examine the Italian defenses begin immediately. The Tobruk garrison is 25,000 men with 220 guns and 70 tanks. General Mannella is in command. There are other Italian units still in positions farther west in Libya.

It's one of those days where lots of little jobs have all arisen at once, and I've had to put them on a list. My intention to vacuum the house got postponed as I felt the onset of a virus, so I used the time instead to tackle some loose ends on my various planned excursions this year. but I woke this morning feeling better so my high-power Rottweiler immune system seems to have been on the case.

Vacuuming and shopping are the greatest chores today along with a plethora of other minor tasks to keep me out of trouble, such as dismantle the Christmas tree - it's Epiphany/Twelth Night.

Box room cleared! Unbelievable amounts of unspeakably horrid rubbish now outside, perhaps not that unbelievable considering a teenage boy was living in there! A serious vacuum is needed today that will be extended to the whole house. In North Africa... The Allied force, renamed 13th Corps, has been increased by the arrival of the 6th Australian Division to replace the 4th Indian Division previously withdrawn to the Sudan. The new force leads the attack on Bardia which now begins. The 16th and 17th Brigades provide the assault units. They have considerable tank and artillery support. In addition three battleships of the Mediterranean Fleet also shell the Italian positions. The attack goes in against the west and southwest fortress and progress is very rapid. Around 30,000 prisoners are taken in the first 24 hours.

This is the last "slob day" before I really get on with 2011 in earnest. Other than cook the missus lunch, I have no plans at all, and will follow my instincts through the day.

If atheism just ran in families it would rapidly die out! Atheists have on average 1 or 2 children - not enough to sustain them. The religious however have on average 3-4 children, more than enough to inherit the Earth. Since there is a strong conviction in most religions that prolific reproduction is a virtue, the survival of religions are assured.

However, since belief is an idea, and can be picked up outside family influence, the survival of atheism is also assured, as by the law of averages some people's circumstances will inevitably cause them to override their genetic predisposition and embrace atheism. History supports this conclusion: atheists have always been present in society and are always in the minority, even when as under 20th Century Communist regimes it was the official belief.

Ideas, like genes, need to keep being passed on in order to survive, and like genes they can mutate, in a process called rationalisation - a new idea is accepted but adapted to be compatible with the individual's existing beliefs. This explains why specific beliefs become diverse in intensity, from fundamentalism to liberalism. If an idea proves too incompatible with an individuals current worldview, it is either rejected outright or the individual dumps the old worldview to accept the new idea - a process called conversion.

Humans living at sea level will start to feel altitude sickness from about 1,500m above sea level. However, strong healthy people will eventually physically adapt to the conditions up to 5,950m. Higher than this and health permanently suffers up to 8,000m. Above 8,000m is known to mountaineers as the "Death Zone" - there is insufficient oxygen to sustain life and prolonged stays at this altitude without tanked oxygen will result in death. However, highly acclimatized people can survive around 12 hours in these conditions, allowing experienced mountaineers to climb Mount Everest (8,848m) without tanked oxygen.

After an absolutely delightful Boxing Day with the house to myself (missus was at daughter's)devoted almost entirely to watching DVD's and consuming beer, Pringles and chocolate, I intend to gradually re-introduce some self-discipline into the remaining two days of my break, like having a bath and a shave, not consuming so many calories and doing the ironing. I will however continue to enjoy myself doing not a great deal!

I enjoyed the most relaxed and happy Christmas Day I can ever remember yesterday. Frankly because for the first time ever there was no one who made me feel awakward, embarrassed, angry, or a problem. I continue to be pleased that I continue to fend off ghosts of events past and fears of the future by focus on the moment - another test passed!

This is the only success for the cruiser in a month-long mission.

It's Christmaaaaaaaaaaaas!! Four days of marital enrichment and personal pleasures! Today, a period of ME time will be enjoyed until 0900 when I serve missus her traditional Xmas cooked breakfast, then I'll be mainly catering until 2pm. TODAY IN MY LIFE
Yesterday turned out to be extremely expensive - nearly £300 at Sainsburys, and I solved my Wacken problem by spending another £200 booking an earlier flight with Eurowings that I didn't know existed. If you travel by air a lot you may know that you CAN'T GET A REFUND on most booked economy flights, so I've a flight to fall back on if I don't make the early one! Oh well you live and learn.

btw if you ever go to Wacken open-air festival, DON'T BOOK ANYTHING before speaking to Andreas Hinz at Mondial Events info@mondialevents.de because he will tell you everything you need to know about getting your ass there and back. He has given me the best customer service I've ever received. Tell him Gary Blonder recommended you!

With Wacken sorted, I can turn my attention to planning our Silver Wedding Anniversary weekend in Paris in January. We are gambling that the Winter weather doesn't bugger the flights!

With all this expense going on, I will need to keep the "accursed other job" going for now, wich is where I'll be most of today before four days of genuine festivity. My holiday starts 8pm GMT!

Here I am still in December 2010 and the burning question in my mind is on 4/8/2011 how to I get from Hamburg to Wacken if I can only start at 17:30 - I could be dead by then! I think I'm kinda relishing the logistical challenge. One thing's for sure, I'd have taken German a lot more serious at school if I knew I was going to Wacken one day!

Today is one of wife's favourite days - the Sainsbury's Christmas food shop, where we pay over the odds for all those Christmas munchies. Whereas most people loathe the whole business, Alison regards it as a trip to Aladdin's cave - she has taught me much about the nature of attitude and perception!

TODAY IN MY LIFE
Pausing for breath after a flurry of frenetic planning activity! I booked the weekend in Paris, which was fairly straightforward, but the Summer proved more awkward. In a fit of pique because Live Nation withdrew tickets for DOWNLOAD from sale until later in the year, (like how is this good business sense?!!) I went right ahead and booked WACKEN OPEN AIR - weekend pass, flights, transfer buses, the whole shebang, only to then realise it backed right on to the end of the Summer Cruise!

Not to lie down easily, I negotiated with wife, son and EasyJet, and managed to do both. The cruise ship docks at Southampton early on Wednesday 3.8.11 - we then fly to Leeds/Bradford Airport in the afternoon. Next day, 4.8.11, when Wacken actually starts, myself and son get out butts to Manchester, fly to Hamburg and chance it on German public transport to get to Wacken at least in time to pitch our tent in time for the Thursday headliners! On Sunday when it's all over, we take the Festival special to Hamburg airport in time for the flight home and the train from Manchester to Bradford. Whew! It will be an intense few days!

Got a good view of the lunar eclipse this morning! A client cancellation at least makes things simpler - I can complete client follow-up, complete paperwork for the Yule break here at my practice, obtain wife's Christmas present then head home and get on with domestic stuff - I need to plan the Wedding Anniversary weekend, Download Festival (Wacken was just to much hassle) and finalise Summer Cruise. After some discussion about the weather, missus and I decided to risk it and assume the weather will be better in January. On our own heads be it!

I was less on top of my emotions than I would have liked yesterday. With the benefit of a little quiet and personal space, I see I overlooked the principle I instill in my clients - the mind doesn't calm itself by default - time must be set aside regularly to actively calm it.

From Berlin... Hitler issues Directive 21. Its message is simple: "The German Armed Forces must be prepared, even before the conclusion of the war against England, to crush Soviet Russia in a rapid campaign." The projected operation is given the code name Barbarossa. The preparations are to be ready by May 15, 1941.
In the Mediterranean... The British submarine Triton is sunk by an Italian tropedo boat in the Straits of Otranto. Valona in Albania is shelled by the British battleships Valiant and Warspite (during the night of December 18-19). The Italians are also active in support of their armies in Albania with Lukova, just north of the Corfu Channel being shelled.
In Britain... A total of 10,969 people evacuated from Gibraltar have now arrived.

Confidence has been boosted by observing myself rise above my own negative feelings. I no longer feel it imperative to be in higher consciousness all the time. Now my focus knows where to be when uncomfortable, it's become automatic and my levels of consciousness run themselves. I am immensely thankful to have finally achieved the prime objective of finding "baseline" peace of mind. My intention now is to see it grow stronger and more robust to the point where nothing troubles me at all - total peace while still in this life experience.

In North Africa... The British forces occupy Fort Capuzzo, Sollum and three other Italian positions near the Egypt-Libya border. The Italian garrisons of these places have withdrawn to the Bardia fortress.
In Washington... President Roosevelt gives a press conference outlining a scheme which he plans to introduce to bring further aid to Britain which he will call Lend-Lease. His argument is that if a neighbor's house is on fire it is only sensible to lend him a hose to stop the fire spreading to your own house, and that it would be stupid to think of asking for payment in such circumstances.
In Vichy France... Laval, the former foreign minister, is released from prison after the German ambassador intervenes.

TODAY IN MY LIFE
With our endowment having matured, and the cash safely deposited, I now need to get frantically planning. Re-furb contractors to appoint, Wedding Anniversary Weekend and Holiday of a lifetime to plan, as well as Download Festival with son! This should keep me busy in the run-up to Christmas!

Over Germany... The first "area bombing" raid on a German city is carried out: Mannheim is attacked by 134 RAF bombers during the night (December 16-17). Large fires are started on both banks of the Rhine River. Other targets include Speyer-am-Rhein and Heilbronn.
Over Switzerland... Basle is accidentally bombed by the British aircraft, killing 4 persons.
In the Mediterranean... There are further British and Italian fleet operations over the next week. The British carrier Illustrious attacks airfields on Rhodes and sends strikes against Italian convoys.

With my business networking meeting cancelled, I have more time than expected (so I can blog this morning after all!), but still need to get shopping done before my career seminar on hypnotherapy to the Year 11 students of Challenge College first thing in the afternoon. The last execution in the Tower of London took place on Thursday, August 14, 1941, when Josef Jakobs, a German spy, was shot by an eight-man firing squad. Because he had suffered a broken ankle when he had parachuted into England on the night of January 31, 1941, he could not stand before the firing squad and he was, instead, seated in an old Windsor chair and tied up. As was customary, one of the squad was supplied with a blank cartridge. Two of the live bullets missed the target (the heart) but nevertheless Jakobs died instantly.

In Ireland... Interned IRA members at Curragh Camp, near Dublin, continue to riot. In fighting with Irish police and military troops, one IRA member are reported shot.

In North Africa... A small British force has entered Libya and now cuts the road leading west from the important Italian position at Bardia.
In Germany... Hitler issues Directive 20 giving orders for the further preparation of the invasion of Greece, Operation Marita. The German forces in Romania are accordingly increased.
In Vichy France... Petain dismisses and arrests Laval and appoints Flandin as foreign minister in his place.

TODAY IN MY LIFE
On the domestic front, Operation Natcrap (as I affectionately called it) went without a hitch and all daughter's stuff got shipped out, so she has now officially "flown the nest". Just waiting for endowment funds to land (expected by end of this week) and then a flurry of activity will ensue, picking contractors, clearing out the box room and planning holidays.

After a frankly lazy hedonistic interlude (which I enjoyed immensely!) the pace now seriously starts to pick up. Two (possibly three) clients and bags of marketing (and hopefully a spot of bookwriting) will easily fill up my day.
